China stock caught up in excitement of WTO

Article Abstract:

The stock value of obscure, Hong Kong-based apartment developer China Prosperity appreciated from $1 a share to as much as $80 a share before settling at roughly $32 in the wake of the euphoria in Wall Street over China's acceptance into the World Trade Organization. Yet the firm reported an operating loss of $7.9 million on revenues of $50.9 million in 1998. Furthermore, China's entry into the WTO can theoretically still be prevented. This indicates that the excitement in the stock market over China's WTO membership might be getting out of hand.

AOL Latin America makes weak debut

Article Abstract:

The initial public offering of America Online Latin America proved to be a disappointment as stock prices only reached a high of $8.44. This was seen to be a weak entry because the initial price of the shares had been slashed to $8 from between $15 and $17. Investors shunned the IPO despite Latin America's projected 41% per year Internet access growth. Problems foreseen are collection problems with customers and the popularity of free Internet access.
