Climate 'incredible' for mergers, acquisitions

Article Abstract:

Analysts believe that the world's biggest corporations in drugs, entertainment, banking and telecommunications could be created, judging from the spate of recent corporate mergers. For instance, America Online bought Time Warner for $142 billion. The deal, the largest acquisition in history, would establish the world's biggest media company. The merger between Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham would also bring about the world's largest pharmaceutical company.

U.S. steelmakers up in arms

Article Abstract:

The US steel manufacturers and the United Steelworkers of America are asking President Clinton to impose a 30%- to 200%-tax on some steel provided by Japan, South Korea and Russia. The US, which registered increased foreign steel shipment by almost 75% in the first half of 1998, saw stiff competition for its steel producers with less expensive steel exported by the said countries. US steelmakers reported that foreign suppliers offer steel at lower prices than its marketing and production costs in their home countries.

EU wants to avoid beef tiff with the U.S

Article Abstract:

The European Union (EU) has proposed to compensate the US for losses associated with its ban on US beef treated with hormones. EU Ambassador Hugo Paeman said the EU will temporarily reduce duties on some US goods until both parties agree on labels for US beef coming into Europe. The proposal is designed to head off any retaliatory action from the US, which earlier won a ruling from the World Trade Organization that the ban is illegal under its rules.
