Clinton takes over

Article Abstract:

Pres Bill Clinton finds himself in the critical position of deciding the future of US trade as he is about to conclude both GATT and North American FreeTrade Agreement negotiations. During his presidential campaign, Clinton has maintained a firm stand in dealing with international trade but failed to vouchany specific course of action. However, Clinton's appointment of Mickey Kantor as US Trade Representative and Ronald H. Brown as Commerce Secretary have casted doubt on the president's stand on the importance of international competition. The two appointees have no concrete experience on trade.

At issue: is the Clinton administration's plan to collect higher fees from visitors to federal recreation areas fair to the public?

Article Abstract:

The US National Parks have to levy fees on the public to maintain the parks, which are the country's assets. Funds are necessary to preserve parks and arrest their deterioration. Commercial users of the parks should be taken into consideration before the public is made to pay more for the parks' upkeep. A right balance has to be achieved between charges levied on the public and commercial users of parks.

Clinton's position

Article Abstract:

President-elect Bill Clinton is expected to support promotion of privatization. A 1992 Apogee Research survey of state comptrollers showed that 94% predicted an increase in privatization in their states in the 2000s decade. Privatization of basic utilities such as airports, electricity and gas, bridges, highways and the water system would be given priority.
