Clouds gather in the sunshine state

Article Abstract:

Many Liberals in Australia had thought that Pauline Hanson might be able to harm the Labor Party much as the Democratic Labor Party did to benefit Menzies in the 1960s. With the Labor Party moving towards a new direction, many working class voters feel abandoned. Hanson has been able to capitalize on Labor's failures by talking about stopping foreigners from buying Australian land and businesses, terminating government funds to Aborigines, and locking out the Asians. Conservatives now view One Nation as a threat to them, however.

Referendum defies conventional wisdom

Article Abstract:

Australia appears to be irrevocably headed toward becoming a republic. The constitutional convention, to be held Jan, 1998, has gathered republican representatives that outnumber monarchists two to one. Prime Minister John Howard's proposal to replace mandatory voting with voluntary voting was a serious error, proving that people in the working class are willing to participate in politics.

Bob's Katterwauling may be too much for the Coalition

Article Abstract:

National Party Member of Parliament Bob Katter believes that every man should be able to protect his family and home by having the right to bear arms. He believes the Hilmer Report's promotion of competition is disastrous for Australia's people in rural and remote areas. Katter feels the National Party should abandon economic policies of Australian Prime Minister John Howard.
