Some members of the Labor party are confident their party is the only one likely to get a majority in the House of Representatives. They believe there is no other alternative than a hung parliament with the Liberal-National coalition relying on the support of Independents and One Nation to stay in office. Such deductions are based on careful analysis of polls and electorates.

The Australian federal elections in Oct 1998 will probably bring a close victory to the winner. Prime Minister John Howard's professional manner has become more hesitant and emotional, suggesting he feels increasing uncertainty about whether his party will retain power. Errors by the Coalition have benefitted the Labor Party.
