Cognos wins licensing deal with GE affiliate

Article Abstract:

Cognos Inc. (Ottawa), a software maker, has landed a global licensing contract with an affiliate of giant General Electric Co., and believes it can use the deal as a springboard to win future contracts with other big companies. Cognos says that it will provide Employers Reinsurance Corp. (ERC) (Overland Park, KS), the world's third-largest reinsurance company, with business intelligence software that will allow thousands of ERC's customers, partners and employees to sort through data more effectively. ERC is the largest piece of GE Capital, GE's financial arm. The deal marks the latest success for Cognos, which has been enjoying steady growth in recent years and is now the world's biggest maker of business intelligence software. Business intelligence software allows companies to analyze corporate data and prepare reports. Analysts say the market is booming as globalization has forced big companies to take on larger markets and more competitors.
