Compaq's earning off more than 60% in first quarter

Article Abstract:

Compaq reports 1st qtr 1992 earnings down 60.3 percent from 1st qtr 1991. The firm blames the situation on price competition and price reductions on computer products. The report sent stock prices down $3.375 a share to $23.75. Compaq's 1st qtr earnings are 53 cents a share or $45.3 million, in comparison to 1991's $1.26 a share and $114.3 million. Sales for the 1st qtr fell from $971 million in 1991 to $783 million. Even if Compaq's earnings improve in subsequent quarters, it is not certain that earnings will be positive for year-to year 1991-1992 results. Compaq expects to release new low-cost computer in Jun 1992, bolstered by heavy advertising, to help put the company back in a strong market position. Compaq may never enjoy the Wall Street status it once had, even with its entry into the low-cost computer market.
