Computerland's survival strategy

Computerland Corp Chmn William Tauscher battles to keep his company organized and alive in a brutally competitive market. Competition generated by clone makers and mail-order companies on the one hand and low-margin computer superstores on the other will probably force another industry consolidation, possibly in 1992. Computerland has shifted the focus of its business away from the middle market, concentrating on corporate customers in big-city areas and on small orders in smaller cities. Computerland acquired Nynex's 79-store chain in Jun 1991 together with a service and support center, and by Sep 1991, the Nynex chain was altogether integrated into Computerland's operations. Computerland now uses the 'just-in-time' method for delivery of systems, operating out of new 250,000-square-foot warehouses. And Computerland is trying out a 'superstore' in Atlanta, GA.

I.B.M.'s report card from new chief

Article Abstract:

Louis V. Gerstner, Jr, IBM's new chairman and CEO, met with 2,300 shareholders and sought to allay their fears about IBM's future. Most of the shareholders are retirees now living in Florida. Gerstner, in a speech that is reminiscent of a politician's, stressed that there are no quick fixes for IBM's troubles. He explained that the root cause of the problem was the company's inability to adjust to the swift changes that were taking place in the computer hardware business. The changes took their toll on IBM's traditional mainstay, mainframe computers. Gerstner cited four objectives for 1993: downsizing the corporation into a more efficient operation, defining a strategy that will determine IBM's focus, increasing decentralization of decision-making and increasing attention to its customer base.
