New rival in hand-held PC's emerges

Article Abstract:

Sun Microsystems Inc is establishing First Person Inc, a subsidiary that will develop hand-held computers to challenge the expected dominance of Apple's Newton personal digital assistant. To counter the formidable backing the Apple product has aligned, Sun is licensing key designs to two large Japanese electronics manufacturers and is attempting to forge partnerships with French and German firms. First Person Inc has around 12 employees and will be located in Palo Alto, CA. Wayne Rosing, the founder of Sunlabs research laboratory, will lead the subsidiary. While market-ready products will not be available for two years, working models are already in existence. Rosing plans to develop the project around several new technologies involving the manipulation of digital information.

New I.B.M. price cuts expected; move Monday said to involve desktops

Article Abstract:

IBM will cut prices on microcomputers by six- to 24 percent on Monday, May 20, 1991. The cuts are a response to deep price cuts by competitors. This is the second price reduction by IBM in the last month. IBM had already cut prices by three- to 38 percent on Apr 23, after Compaq Computer Corp cut its prices by as much as 34 percent. IBM and Compaq are threatened by clone manufacturers and by Apple Computer Inc, which is taking market share after price cuts initiated in March. Low prices will translate into narrow manufacturers' margins, putting pressure on profitability, but computer buyers will benefit.
