Millions of Australians during the 1998 holiday season will receive gifts such as cellular phones and computers. Although these new technological devices are supposed to make life easier, they, however, are unnecessarily complicated. A cellular telephone user would have to read the instruction book just to do a simple task such as calling another person.

Camelot! Camelot!

Article Abstract:

The Alice Springs Camel Cup race is held annually in Australia. In 1998, it received attention from the news media. Many Australians doubt the usefulness of camels, but camels have the ability to make long trips without much food and water. Australia has about 250,000 wild camels. The first camel was brought to Australia from the Canary Islands in 1840.

Burn Philp's ship is scuttled

Article Abstract:

The remaining contents of the headquarters of the historic Australian trading company, Burns, Philp and Company, was sold at auction. Items bearing the initials or emblems of the company sold for very high prices. Seals, for example, sold for $80 to $500 each. The auction raised a total of about $1.1 million.
