2 companies take separate paths to speed delivery of Web pages

Article Abstract:

The Internet was originally designed to only handle E-mail and has a very hard time delivering high-speed video content. Two companies, Inktomi and Akamai, are vying, by differing methods, to create technology that will speed up data transmission. Inktomi, in conjunction with AOL, uses a 'caching' technique that stores highly demanded data on separate servers to prevent slowdowns and crashes. Akamai, working with Yahoo, uses a 'distributive' technique that routes Web page requests to servers that can respond the fastest.

Cutting the Web down to size; new tools let you get the information you want (as long as your computer doesn't crash)

Article Abstract:

New services and tools that let Internet users bypass or streamline Web browsing are available from firms like Snippets, EntryPoint, DoDots, NeoPlanet and others. Analysts see more drawbacks than benefits for users in the short term, however. In order to use the services, users often must divulge personal information, without any guarantees of protection of privacy. In addition, setting up customized profiles can be cumbersome, and the software may cause the computer to start or run more slowly, or even crash.
