Darwin on a disk

Article Abstract:

Lightbinders' $99.95 Darwin multimedia CD-ROM data base is a remarkable compilation of the full text and original illustrations from naturalist Charles Darwin's books 'The Voyage of the Beagle,' 'The Origin of Species' and 'The Descent of Man.' Along with these key works is an 1859 essay on the theory of evolution by Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace. In addition, the CD-ROM contains 650 color and monochrome images, sound recordings from the Laboratory of Ornithology at Cornell University, a table of major events in Darwin's life, maps, study guides and a 1,000-reference bibliography. The disk is accessed via the Discpassage utility, which is included. The Search option allows free-text searching using Boolean operators. The alternative is a more structured Browse operation on set fields. Lightbinders intends to make the product a comprehensive collection of Darwin's writings and link each significant point in his arguments to appropriate pictures, animations and sounds. The company asks for users help in identifying and adding new information. Lightbinders also publishes a CD-ROM version of the Journal of Biological Chemistry.
