Conrad Black sold an 18.7% stake in Southam Inc to Paul Desmarais in Mar 1993. The sale and accompanying voting alliance, in addition to the financing of Black's Nov 1992 purchase of Southam stock, are questioned by analysts. Black hopes to revitalize the publishing company.

Conrad Black's bold bid for Southam

Black purchased The Toronto Star for $259 million in 1992, which amounts to 23% of the Southam publishing empire. Analysts expect him to eventually purchase a controlling interest in the paper because of his previous investment habits.
