Desperate and dateless

Article Abstract:

The Australian mining entrepreneurs are faced with economic problems of volatile stock market, lack of investor interest, and low commodity prices. Many explorers have run out of funds and many more are facing the same predicament. A research conducted by Richard Harris, mining analyst, revealed that 120 junior explorers had less than $500,000 in cash and 60 had less than $200,000. Many of these explorers are either seeking joint-ventures or are looking to merge with bigger companies.

Going bananas

Article Abstract:

The trade war between the European Union and the United States over EU protections for Caribbean banana growers is making Australia its latest battleground. Ohio-based Chiquita Brands International, the world's largest banana producer, took control of Blueberry Farms Australia via shareholder vote on December 11, 1997. The US has joined forces with banana-producing nations of Latin America to fight the EU's potentially precedent-setting protectionist policy.

Trick or treaty? Border blitz: the OECD wants to give multinationals sweeping new powers that could threaten national sovereignty

Article Abstract:

The OECD will meet in Paris to discuss a proposed treaty, the Multilateral Agreement on Investment (MAI), that would make little distinction between foreign multinational investors and local investors. The MAI is unique in that foreign investments would be protected prior to actually being made.
