Article Abstract:

Australian Prime Minister John Howard's appointment of Helen Coonan as revenue minister was done at the suggestion of Peter Costello. Danna Vale was appointed veterans affairs minister and Brendan Nelson was appointed minister of education, training and science due to their efforts at buttering up the Prime Minister. Simon Crean of the Labor Party has also made appointments to his shadow cabinet.

Facing criticism, Parliamentary House speaker Neil Andrew's position could be threatened. Although the Prime Minister has supported him in the past, Andrew has a reputation of being independent. Under the system in Australia, the speaker cannot be completely independent. The article provides additional information on the politics afoot in Australia.

A study was conducted to find out how voters rate issues and how they judge the government's handling of those issues. Bronwyn Bishop pointed out that matters regarded as Coalition issues were not rated highly by voters in terms of importance and were languishing down the list.
