Digitizing TV into obsolescence

Article Abstract:

Digital television will revolutionize the way television is used, both in the home and in business. Applications will range from high definition television (HDTV) to advances in teleconferencing, video telephones, interactive education systems and electronic cameras. Video systems will function as an advanced home computer system connected to a network with fiber-optic cables. Three standards are under development: the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has approved the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) standard for compression of still images without data loss; the Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) standard, which addresses interframe compression and takes advantage of the way the human eye sees moving images, is being worked out; and a standard called P times 64 allows for faster transmission speed, but it suffers because of lower image quality.
