Ask it no questions: the camera can lie

Article Abstract:

The ability of computer imaging to alter photographs calls into question the authenticity of photographic reality and is likely to alter society's conception of photographs as being mirrors of reality. Computer imaging is an outgrowth of electronic technology and allows anyone to alter a photographic image by recomposing and combining photographs in a way that is virtually undetectable. Computer imaging opens doors for the arts but is perilous for photojournalism since the credibility of the reproduced image will be diminished and readers of newspapers and magazines are likely to view photographs more as illustrations than reportage.

Optimising laminates

Article Abstract:

New software permits designers to visualize and modify fiber angles in composites. This accelerates modelling and makes better optimized, more sophisticated structures possible. Composites are ideal for doubly-curved surfaces, which it is hard to machine sheet metal for. The strength of composites, however, depends on the orientation of their fibers, which was difficult to predict until this software became available.
