Drug makers battle ad ban

Article Abstract:

Drug makers in Canada want laws that restrict consumer advertising of prescription products to be relaxed, citing the inflow of US campaigns. Direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising of prescription drugs is banned in Canada under the Food and Drugs Act. But any Canadian can pick up a US magazine and see ads promoting the latest prescription drugs that treat impotence, depression or baldness. The main issue is the regulatory differences between Canada and the US over drug advertising in Canada. The debate over that issue is seen by some to surely intensify as the number of prescription drugs rises.
