Dunlap, 4 others face SEC lawsuit

Article Abstract:

Sunbeam Corp's former CEO Al Dunlap and four of his managers are facing a lawsuit filed by the SEC, accusing them of manipulating the small appliance maker's earnings in 1997 for the purpose of selling the company at an inflated price. Also, the civil lawsuit filed in US District Court in Miami, FL, accuses a former partner at Arthur Andersen and Co of being an accomplice in the scheme. Overall, the SEC accuses Dunlap and the four Sunbeam managers of using accounting tactics that resulted in the bullish quarterly earnings reports in 1997.

Razor rivals face restraining order

Article Abstract:

Razor USA, a CA-based distributor of Razor scooters made by JD of Taiwan, has received a favorable court decision in connection with its patent infringement case against 12 competitors. Judge Manuel Real, a United States District judge in Los Angeles, CA, gave Razor a temporary restraining order, stopping its competitors from selling or making similar scooters. Razor filed the lawsuit after receiving a patent for is rear fender-brake system on October 31, 2000.

28 states sue over CD price policy

Article Abstract:

Attorneys general from 28 states have filed lawsuits against the world's top five music labels including several retail chains for maintaining artificially high CD prices from 1995 to 2000. The lawsuit filed in New York claimed that such anti-competitive pricing policies have cost consumers in the US some $480 million since 1995. The focus of the lawsuit is the minimum advertised pricing policy which was introduced to discourage discounters in 1995.
