Dying to be Australian

Article Abstract:

The Australian government continues to take a firm stance against the unexpected arrival of foreigners seeking political asylum. The country's navy is authorized to turn back and even fire upon vessels approaching Australia. Prime Minister John Howard does not elaborate on his immigration policy, and opponent Kim Beazley is accused of hiding behind him.

Amidst resistance to the idea that Australia needs more people (i.e. skilled labor), Australia should remember that it is an island continent, but not an island unto itself. Statistics indicate that rural populations are shrinking along with the general economic outlook. The answer to Australia's people problem may lie in immigration.
