E-mail nudges aside stationery stores

Article Abstract:

E-mail is taking a big chunk out of the stationery store industry. A newly released Cesus data has reported that approximately 26% of the traditionally mom and pop stores have closed shop from 1992 to 1997 due to a number of competitive threats. The trend is driven by the popularity of the Internet, which resulted in the onslaught of free electronic greeting cards, and mass-market retailing, which moed business stationery sales toward category killers Staples and Office Depot.
