Company must pay $30 million for spills

Article Abstract:

Koch Industries Inc has agreed to pay a $30-million fine to cover damages resulting from over 300 oil spills into US waterways. Federal regulators said that the company was responsible for about three million gallons of oil that were spilled into lakes, rivers and shorelines from 1990 to 1997. Under the settlement agreement, Koch Industries must also spend $5 million on environmental projects in affected states and improve its pipeline manitenance.

Dioxin draft stops short of calling for more cuts

Article Abstract:

A draft report prepared by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has pinpointed the dioxin 2,3,7,8-TCDD as a human carcinogen. The EPA report, which points to other dioxin-like compounds as possible human carcinogens, however, disappointed environmentalists for failing to recommend the banning of chemicals whose production releases dioxins. Dioxin is a terms used to describe over 100 chemicals that have a structure similar to chlorine.

EPA to ease coal-fired plant rules, cut emissions

Article Abstract:

The EPA is poised to loosen restriction on coal-fired power plants and factories in exchange for agreements in emissions cuts. It is drafting a rule that would ease some of the comlex rules covering coals-fired power plants and large factories across the US if these facilitie agree to reduce their emissions of pollutants such as nitrogen oxides. This development could eventually lead to cleaner air for millions of Americans.
