EU approves Time Warner, AOL merger

Article Abstract:

The European Commission approved the merger of America Online Inc. and Time Warner Inc. but the companies have yet to obtain approval from U.S. antitrust regulators. The merger if approved by the Federal Trade Commission in Washington D.C. would bring about the largest provider of on-line services and one of the biggest cable television networks in the U.S.

Industry analysts said that Dulles, Va.-based America Online Inc. and other media leaders are attempting to monopolize the market for certain categories of online music. The mega-mergers between AOL, Time Warner Inc. and EMI Group PLC will transform the media industry.

Montreal, Que.-based Seagram Company Ltd. has been acquired by Paris, France-based Vivendi Universal for $33.6 billion in stock. The three-way deal, which includes Canal Plus S.A., rivals the merger between America Online Inc. and Time Warner Inc.
