Economists are uncertain whether the Federal Reserve (Fed) will let interest rates remain unchanged because no one is sure whether the recent cooling of the economy will last or whether it is just a temporary pause. The Fed has repeated its warning that the risks of higher inflation still exists. The Fed's recent statement, however, that demand "is" moderating is considered by one economist to mean that the Fed is increasingly confident that its desired "soft landing" for the economy has been achieved.
