Eking out a life in the ice: how microbes survive in Antarctica and might on other worlds

Article Abstract:

Researchers have discovered an aggregate community of microbes living in liquid waters in Antarctica. This discovery has raised the possibility of finding some similar form of life on Mars and Jupiter. John Priscu, a microbial ecologist, argues that during the sunless winters, microbes freeze and live a suspended state called cryobiosis. However, for about 150 days the sun enables these organisms to survive.

The Big Bang is back: a high-powered physics experiment promises to turn back the clock to a microsecond after the birth of the universe

Article Abstract:

This article describes a plan to use a new particle accelerator, the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York, to recreate the conditions that many physicists believe existed a microsecond after the Big Bang that created the universe. Relevant points include the scientists' hopes of recreating the superdense state of matter that existed immediately after the Big Bang.

Lynx to the past

Article Abstract:

Environmentalists and scientists in Colorado are trying to reintroduce the lynx to its original habitat in the San Juan Mountains, but there is no guarantee that the new animals, relocated from British Columbia, will prosper. Ecosystems perform best when all their parts, including predators, are present, but development near wilderness areas jeopardizes reintroduction programs.
