Encryption schemes aimed at film piracy

Article Abstract:

The motion picture industry is determined to counter the threat of pirated DVDs and Internet-transmitted copies of new movies shown on digital TV cable broadcasts. Services, such as DirecTV and Dish Network, will start to use a Digital Visual Interface (DVI) connection device in 2002 to incorporate the new High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection encryption scheme that disallows copying of films from satellite television or versions for HDTV transmissions. This encryption protocol protects uncompressed programming between a cable TV box and a television set.

For a Few Dollars Less, TV Making Moves Abroad

Article Abstract:

Television set production is moving overseas as manufacturers rely on cheaper production costs in Mexico and Asia. China exported 2 million sets in 2003 that were 20 inches or larger. This compares with 16,000 in 2000. The French electronics company Thomson has established a joint venture with China's TCL International Holdings to produce 18 million television sets. Of the 32 million TV sets bought in the US every year, only 1.5 million are manufactured domestically.
