Europe's ambivalence

Article Abstract:

European nations are forming new alliances in the wake of the collapse of communism in the East. The move for a united Europe has gained new ground as a result of rapid political changes in the region. The leading proponents of this move are France and Germany who seek to form a new military alliance outside the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Called Eurocorps, this new military alliance could serve as the precursor for an independent European Community army.

How NATO works

Article Abstract:

The chief role of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is to defend Europe and North America from aggression. Established in 1949, NATO's political leadership is governed by the North Atlantic Council which is composed of delegates from the 16 member nations. Military forces are divided into three commands that oversee the defense of their assigned portion of Europe. These are the Europe, Atlantic and Channel commands.

Responding to the changing world role ... most NATO allies reduce budgets and troop levels

Article Abstract:

Developments in Eastern Europe have prompted North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) members to reassess their defense needs. Most countries have opted to cut defense spending, a reaction to the loss of traditional enemies in the once mighty eastern bloc. Of the 16 member nations with active armed forces with NATO, only three have indicated a desire to increase expenditures for defense.
