A century of powered flight: boxing Hargrave

Article Abstract:

Several pretenders over the years claimed to have launched their flying machine before the Wright brothers, one amongst them was Lawrence Hargrave who also had a photographic proof. Hargrave's work on box kites and cambered wing surfaces supports his success story but his fixation with flapping wings undid his pioneering work and he died almost unforgotten.

Howe's tricks: Tom Gilling discovers that Australia's very first book was the precursor to the modern true crime yarn

Article Abstract:

Published by Andrew Bent in 1819, Australia's first book centered on the exploits of the bandit Michael Howe, who would commit sprees of robbery and disappear with his gang into the woods. The 36-page book "MIchael Howe, the Last and Worst of the Bush Rangers of Wan Diemen's Land" is the precursor to the modern true crime novel.
