ExxonMobil trims 16,000

Article Abstract:

ExxonMobil has announced announced that more than 16,000 workers will be laid off between Dec 1999 through 2003, a number representing 13% of its worldwide labor force. Roughly 2,000 of its employees were already laid off in 1999. A strong job market may help some of the ExxonMobil workers in back office positions find work. However, outplacement expert John Challenger noted that that geologists and petrochemical engineers in the oil industry who lose their jobs will have more difficulty in finding employment.

UAW deal sends Ford a message

A tentative labor contract between DaimlerChrysler AG and the United Auto Workers stipulates that DaimlerChrysler will not close, consolidate, spinoff or dispose any plant or business unit organized by the UAW. The contract will have little effect on DaimlerChrysler, but its wordings are expected to put pressure on Ford Motor Corp not to sell or spin off its Visteon parts subsidiary.
