FTC gives AOL-Time Warner more time

Article Abstract:

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has delayed for another three weeks its decision on whether to approve America Online's $127-billion buyout of Time Warner. The FTC said this would give the two companies enough time to offer new concessions that will resolve antitrust issues. The commission has voiced concerns that the merger of the two companies would hamper competitors such as Disney and EarthLink, another Internet service provider (ISP). The FTC wants to make sure that rival ISPs would have access to Time-Warner's high-speed cable network at reasonable prices.

FCC rumbles may dampen MCI-Sprint party

Article Abstract:

MCI WorldCom's $115-billion merger with Sprint earned a comment from Federal Communications Commission Chairman William Kennard, who said that the proposed deal would result to less competition that would be bad for consumers. MCI WorldCom CEO Bernie Ebbers said that the combined company would provide high-speed Internet and other phone services in an attempt to diffuse Kennard's comment. If regulators approve the deal, the merged firm would dominate over a third of the long-distance phone market.

Not the same old song and dance

Article Abstract:

America Online Inc, a Dulles, VA-based provider of online services, has received US Federal Trade Commission's approval for its acquisition of NY- based Time Warner Inc, the leading media company in the world. The merged company, which will be known as AOL Time Warner, is expected to transform several industries such as television broadcasting and electronic commerce. In addition, AOL Timer Warner will also concentrate its efforts on cross-promotion and other bottom-line benefits.
