IBM has lost much of its market share to computer clones, lower demand for mainframe systems, and higher prices. The computer giant restructured its operations to recapture some of its share. IBM's new operating software is similar to Microsoft's Windows 3.1.

The merger of the near-bankrupt Central Guaranty Trust Co and Toronto-Dominion Bank was managed by the Canada Deposit Insurance Corp. Toronto-Dominion paid $125 million to acquire the assets of Central Guaranty Trust.
