Canada's cultural protectionism policies are under attack. International Trade Minister Art Eggleton argues in favor of lowering some of the trade barriers, and the World Trade Organization ruled against government efforts to protect the magazine industry in a Jan 16, 1997 interim decision.

Mount Allison University reappointed its controversial president, Ian Newbould, despite widespread opposition among both faculty and the student body. Newbould's aggressive cost-cutting strategy succeeded in retiring the school's $13 million debt, but it alienated the professoriate.

Article Abstract:

Codfish catches in the Atlantic Ocean has fallen dramatically in recent years. Canadian ships inside the 200-mile jurisdictional limit at the Grand Banks of Newfoundland confronted foreign trawlers to protest overfishing. Foreign trawlers blame Canadians for the lack of fish.
