Firestone leaves an indelible mark

Article Abstract:

Nashville, TN-based tire manufacturer Bridgestone/Firestone is attempting to overcome what has become one of the biggest and deadliest incidents involving auto safety in the US. Victims of auto crashes related to defective Firestone tires are also attempting to pick up their lives. The tiremaker recalled 6.5 million tires in Aug 2000. At least 148 people have lost their lives in accidents linked to the recalled tires, while another 525 were injured. Bridgestone/Firestone has lost nearly two-thirds of its stock value. It will also spend $1.3 billion collectively with Ford Motor Co on the recall.

Ford's idea of tire inflation differs from others

Article Abstract:

The proper tire pressure on the tires installed on sport-utility vehicles has become controversial. Most of the 6.5 million Firestone P235/75R-15 tires that were recalled were installed on Ford Explorer sport-utility vehicles. Ford has recommended a pressure of 26 pounds per square inch (PSI) on the Explorer to prevent it from rolling over. Watchdog groups and lawyers suing Ford and Firestone say that lower air pressure contributes to the tread-separation problems that led to the recall of Firestone's tires.

What you don't know about your tires

Article Abstract:

The move by Bridgestone/Firestone on Aug 9, 2000, to recall its tires prompted consumers to question the reliability of tires they use. Kristen Udowitz of the tire industry's Rubber Manufacturers Association concedes there is no reliable information on the safety and quality of tires. The recall has also prompted Ford Motor Co, Firestone's biggest, oldest and closest customer, to closely monitor Firestone tires. Ford will also not solely rely on Firestone to discover and report problems.
