Court refuses to fine United Airlines machinists $50M

Article Abstract:

United Airlines' motion to have its mechanics' union, the International Assn of Machinists Lodge 141-M, fined by $50 million has been rejected by US District Judge William Hibler. The airline filed the motion over allegations that the mechanics have caused numerous flight delays by doing excessive repairs or slowing down needed repairs on jet aircraft. However, Hibler noted that the union has made all efforts to comply with his temporary restraining order and has reminded its members that a slowdown violates federal labor law.

Airlines try to put time on their side in bad weather

Article Abstract:

The airlines' decision to cancel flights early helped minimize inconvenience suffered by travellers and avoided a repeat of the infamous delays at Detroit's Metro Airport during New Year 1999. The incident led to calls for an airline passenger bill of rights while the airlines promised that they would improve service. United canceled half of its early evening flights out Chicago's O'Hare on Dec 10, 2000 after a major snowstorm threatened the city.
