Summit produces strategies to ease gridlock at airports

Record flight delays in summer 2000 prompted a two-hour conference between Transportation Sec Rodney Slater, the FAA, executives of major US airlines and labor union officials on Aug 21, 2000. One outcome of the meeting is a task force that will be created to monitor airline-service quality that will recommend any changes, if necessary, and report back to Slater in 90 day. Furthermore, the FAA has vowed to improve oversight of flights in air space over Chicago, IL; Boston, MA; New York City, NY-based John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport; Newark, NJ; and Philadelphia, PA.

Airlines raise fares as costs continue rising

Article Abstract:

Major airlines have raised at least some domestic and US-Canada fares in May 2001, despite softening air travel. Southwest raised round-trip fares by $2 or $4 in 400 of its 1,400 markets. Other major airlines, including United, Delta, Northwest and Continental followed on routes where they compete with Southwest. Airlines explained that they have to raise fare prices because of rising operating costs.
