Food sales drive 'terrific' earnings for Wal-Mart

Wal-Mart's 1st qtr 2000 earnings has reached record highs at 45% to $1.3 billion, or 30 cents a diluted share, in comparison to the $916 million in earnings over the same period in 1999. The quarterly sales and earnings results of the largest retailer in the world has beaten Wall Street analysts' expectations by a penning and sent its stock up by 88 cents to $53. Wal-Mart's vast assortment, low price and keen inventory management are the factors that gives it an edge over its competitors.

Net provides clearance aisle

Article Abstract:

Major retail chains and even Internet-only retailers are using the Internet to solve their inventory problems. JC Penny has made available excess merchandise from its catalog on the Internet. Target is using two websites to sell overstock and clearance items from its catalogs. Usage of the Internet have enabled bricks-and-mortar retailers to improve their margins. Internet retailers have also adopted the online clearance concept.

Lands' End earnings land below par

Article Abstract:

Lands' End posted earnings of $347,000 or 1 cent a diluted share in the third quarter of 1998, below analysts' expectations of 24 cents a share. The company, which had a 1% improvement in third quarter revenue to $322 million from $319 million, in the year-ago period, said that it had higher expenses during the quarter to cover severance packages and the creation of its Internet catalog. Led by its new CEO David Dyer, the company will face its biggest challenge in putting inventory more in line with sales.
