Hot rods, hot wheels: autos power up

Article Abstract:

Automakers are taking their pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles, sedans and even minivans and creating limited edition, high performance versions of these vehicles and marketing them as racing cars more popularly known as hot rods or muscle cars. For instance, Mercedes-Benz and AMG have jointly developed the $65,000 ML 55 AMG, which is actually an M-Class sport utility vehicle featuring a 342-horsepower V-8 engine. Oldsmobile is marketing a Silhouette minivan featuring a performance tuned engine and custom tuned headers.

Ford says it will quit Firestone if buyers shun tires

Article Abstract:

Ford Motor Co stressed that its existing relationship with Bridgestone/Firestone is on a day-to-day basis and will drop the manufacturer's products in 2001 if consumers refuse to buy Ford trucks using Firestone tires. Ford and Bridgestone/Firestone officials attended Congressional hearings on Sep 6, 2000, regarding the recall of 6.5 million tires, most of which have been standard equipment on the Ford Explorer since its introduction in 1990.

GM beefs up incentive plan

Article Abstract:

General Motors (GM), hoping to recover some of the market share it lost during the strikes at its facilities in Flint, MI, is implementing a new program of rebates and discounts for its employees and their kin. The company, which hopes to regain its 31%-share of the US motor vehicle market, is giving as much as $3,500 in rebates for its Chevrolet Blazer in an effort to generate revenues. GM's other incentives include a $2,000-rebate on the '99 Oldsmobile Aurora, as much as $2,750 on the '98 Pontiac Bonneville, as high as $2,000 for the '99 Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire and as much as $750 for the '99 Chevrolet C/K 400 pickup.
