Article Abstract:

The financial downfall of the Eatons department store chain is a major event in Canadian history. Since founded in 1869, Eatons department stores became the country's fourth-largest employer. The dynasty began its decline with current generation of Eatons who took over in the early 1970s.

Eatons, the largest department store chain in Canada, had become a fixture in Canadian life. On the Pairie, Eaton's catalogs were used to select Christmas gifts and as outhouse toilet paper. The empire was lost by the third and current generation of Eatons.
