Article Abstract:

Television producers use canned laughter in the knowledge that people like to laugh with others, rather than in isolation. Robert Provine of the University of Maryland says that we actually have little conscious control over laughter, which is why someone laughing on demand sounds unnatural. Laughter is similar throughout various cultures, but women tend to laugh more than men, especially while speaking.

Better read than dead

Article Abstract:

Terence Hennessey, literature professor and voracious reader, experienced a stroke that affected only his ability to make visual sense of written language. Hennessey learned braille, which worked until he developed diabetes that attacked his tactile sensitivity. Finally Hennessey learned Hebrew, a language that reads right to left, in an attempt to again comprehend written language.
