GM defends move that led to strike

Article Abstract:

General Motors' Flint Metal Center workers have staged a second strike over the pull out of dies from the plant in Flint, MI. General Motors CEO Jack Smith said the strike could immediately result to plant closures. The strike came after GM pulled out dies used to stamp fenders, hoods and other parts for Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups. According to union leaders, the move of GM is unprecedented and is a violation of a local contract that awarded parts work to the Flint plant. However, GM argues that it can remove the dies and take it anywhere the company wants. On June 4, 1998, metal center workers walked out that resulted to the closure of 10 plants and laid off 18,070 workers. Meanwhile, there are reports that GM may manufacture new sport-utility vehicles in Mexico.

GM shops suppliers for spare parts

Article Abstract:

General Motors is seeking the assistance of its suppliers aimed at making up for lost production at its striking facilities. GM is hoping for enough parts to restart production of key vehicles such as Chevrolet and GMC sport utilities and pickups in order to reopen truck assemblies in Janesville, WI, and Arlington, TX, that were closed as a result of strikes at the Flint Metal Center and Delphi East parts complex. As part of a long term effort, GM is seeking alternative sources for GM parts that are prone to shutdown because of strikes by the United Auto Workers labor union in its Flint, OH, factories.
