GM sets out to win friends, convert consumers

Article Abstract:

General Motors (GM), eager to recoup some of the market share it lost during the recent 54-day strike from June 1998 to July 1998 where it reportedly lost $2.85 billion in revenues, has unveiled Auto Show in Motion, a marketing technique designed to showcase its products. The company, whose market share fell to about 21% during the strike, is inviting car owners to try over 160 vehicle models, both GM-made and those manufactured by its rivals, just to make a comparison. GM, due to its size. needs at least 30% of the market to maintain the operation of its various facilities and keep its workers employed.

Article Abstract:

US steelmakers are urging the Commerce Department to impose taxes on steel exported by Japan, Russia and Brazil. The request comes after a federal commission confirmed that steel from said countries was sold in the country in very low prices. The US registered a record-high of 4.4 million tons in August 1998, up by 8% from the same month in 1997. Meanwhile, the Commerce Department and the International Trade Commission is expected to decide on steel round wire from Canada, India, Japan, South Korea, Spain and Taiwan.
