Corel Systems CEO Michael Cowpland has waged an audacious battle to take market share from Microsoft Corp. Corel reports FY revenues of $450 million, compared to Microsoft's $11.8 billion. However, Corel believes that the programming language Java will end Microsoft's dominance of the software market.

Down, but not out: a kickboxing chairman plots Corel's return to profitability

Corel Corp's stock price fell from $25 in Nov 1995, to $12 in Jan 1996, after the firm announced a $1 million loss for 4th qtr 1995. Chmn Michael Cowpland hopes to turn around the firm by introducing new CD-ROM and video-conferencing products. It may also acquire WorldPerfect Corp.
