Global treasure hunt: a painless geography lesson to help remedy American ignorance

Article Abstract:

Bushbuck Charms, Viking Ships & Dodo Eggs ($49.95), from PC Globe Inc, Tempe, AZ, is educational software that can help students learn geography. This program is similar to the Carmen Sandiego series from Broderbund Software Inc in that 'detective work' is combined with geography lessons. But PC Globe's program is much more detailed compared to the simpler, limited maps that were originally included in Broderbund's products. PC Globe's program makes players into contestants in a global scavenger hunt. There are three levels of play, so that adults, too, will find Bushbuck challenging. The program runs on IBM PCs and compatibles. Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego now appears in a deluxe version, for $79.95. The product package comes with the 1991 World Almanac and Book of Facts,' which is used with the game. In Jun 1991, Broderbund plans to release Where in America's Past is Carmen Sandiego? ($59.95), which combines detective work with lessons in American history.

Young at heart

Article Abstract:

Knowledge Adventure, $79.95, from Knowledge Adventure Inc, La Crescenta, CA; and KidPix, $59.95, from Broderbund Software Inc are two outstanding examples of good educational software. Knowledge Adventure, which is for IBM-or-compatible microcomputers, is a multimedia, hypertext-like program that allows users to explore within a database of information combining text, sounds and visuals. The program is recommended for parents and teachers, and for children ages seven and older. KidPix is a paint program that comes in both Macintosh and IBM versions. KidPix is for younger children and is as simple as fingerpainting and offers fun tools including rubber stamps, pencils, paint buckets and erasers that all make delightful sounds. Users selecting characters from the alphabet will hear a synthesized voice reading the character in Spanish or English.
