Trips through geography and time

Article Abstract:

PC USA ($69.95), which runs on IBM PCs and compatibles, is a computerized atlas for helping students learn about the United States. PC USA is a companion product to an earlier program, PC Globe ($69.95). PC USA is more than a geography program, merging maps with a data base of statistics and information. Such a program - called a geographic information system (GIS) - is usually expensive and highly complex. Both these programs require 512Kbytes and a color adapter. Both are highly recommended. They can be ordered from PC Globe Inc of Tempe, AZ. For the Apple Macintosh, Culture, The Hypermedia Guide to Western Civilization ($175) is recommended. This program covers history and culture, using 'hypertext' to create a multidimensional educational tool. Culture is available from Cultural Resources Inc of Cranford, NJ.

Learning about Earth

Article Abstract:

Earthquest ($79.95), from Earthquest Inc, is a Hypercard-based data base that teaches users about the planet. Earthquest was demonstrated at the Macworld Expo in Boston in Aug 1990 during a keynote address by John Sculley. Because it contains so much information, Earthquest requires a hard disk and at least 1Mbyte - and preferably 2Mbytes - of main memory. Earthquest is superior educational software. It is fun and it has significant educational value, it is easy and intuitive to use, and it is relatively inexpensive. Earthquest is also easy to customize because Hypertalk, Hypercard's scripting language, allows relatively inexperienced programmers to create arrangements that reflect topics of special interest to a class.
