Heirs apparent: corporate governance

Article Abstract:

The unexpected ascension of director Ian Burgess to deputy chairman instead of CEO Hugh Morgan underscores a trend for more careful corporate governance in Australia, in the wake of disastrous share price drops in firms such as BHP, Burns Philp, and Coles Myer after CEOs became chairmen. Ironically, Morgan has presided over a successful reorganization and the firm's overall outlook is strong.

Workers face a new age of choice

Article Abstract:

The compulsory employer-funded Superannuation Guarantee scheme was introduced in Australia in 1994, which has grown to about 170,000 do-it-yourself (DIY) account funds. DIY super funds usually have one to four members who act as trustees. However, beginning Jul 1, 1999, all new employees joining a superannuation fund will be able to choose from four funds nominated by their employer.
