Higher rates blamed for slower pace of car sales

Article Abstract:

Higher interest rates and lower consumer spending caused automobile sales in May 2000 to decline by 2% from their previous levels in May 1999. It was only Ford Motors among US carmakers which reported a modest 1.4% increase in car sales. Sales by General Motors were down by 5.% from May 1999 while DaimlerChrysler lost 18% during the same period. For their part, Japanese automakers reported sales increases. Sales by Toyota, Honda and Nissan rose by 2.7%, 3.6%, and 10%, respectively.

Truck sales to rise, outpace autos

Article Abstract:

Automaker analysts of General Motors, Ford Motor and DaimlerChrysler predict a slight slowdown in automobile sales this year, but they expect truck sales to outpace car sales in 2001. For 1999, US auto sales will only be between 15 mil and 15.5 mil due to several factors including a weaker dollar againsts the Japanese yen and the euro. However, sales will rise, with trucks surpassing car sales due in part to a solid labour market and low inflation rates.

Car sales stall, but set record in 2000

Article Abstract:

Car sales declined for the third consecutive month in Dec 2000, down by 8% from the year-ago level. General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler all registered double-digit declines during the month. Slumping sales have led to speculations that automakers may shut down plants and offer higher consumer incentives during early 2001. Nevertheless, the industry managed to sell 17.4 million vehicles in 2000, higher by 2.6% from 1999 sales volume.
