Humbled in Atlanta, I.B.M. hopes to rebound in Sydney

Article Abstract:

With its 40-year technology-supply contract with the Olympics to end in Dec. 2000, IBM is aggressively marketing its role as head provider of 2000 Olympics information technology. IBM is planning to use the Internet and TV to advertise its services to the Olympics. The company will also be entertaining 1,000 or so customers in Sydney, Australia during the Olympics and hopes to impress them with its performance under pressure of immovable deadlines, helping them to see the business problems IBM may be able to solve for them.

Shortage of technology parts is still dampening results; companies pay higher prices for needed components

Article Abstract:

A shortage of electronic components has hindered the quarterly earnings of companies like Ericsson, Sun Microsystems and IBM. Electronic component makers have plans to expand production capacity, but the current shortages will continue to hinder big businesses in the world's information technology and global communications areas.
