I.B.M. said to seek Intel clone; possible competitor for chip supplier

Article Abstract:

IBM is cloning Intel Corp's 80486 and Pentium microprocessors and may market its versions in competition with Intel in 1994 or 1995. IBM has a secret agreement with Intel allowing it to clone the company's microprocessors, subject to restrictions on the number made and their manner of sale. It is rumoured that IBM may only sell the chips to other microcomputer vendors already mounted on circuit boards, which may limit their acceptance. Together with joint-venture partners Apple Computer Inc and Motorola, IBM is also developing the PowerPC RISC (reduced-instruction-set computer) microprocessor in an even more radical effort to break Intel's domination of the microprocessor market. Industry analysts think IBM may see Intel clone production as a way of putting its excess semiconductor manufacturing capacity to use until it is needed for PowerPC production.

Sematech's new mission is defined

Article Abstract:

Congress is mandating that Sematech use ten percent of its $100 million 1993 budget for environmental research. The government sponsors the manufacturing consortium but has never before intervened and mandated where the money specifically goes. A variety of grass roots organizations and a national environmental group lobbied to have Congress enforce the reapportionment. Sematech is working with US companies to develop advanced chip-making technologies and equipment. The organization will now also focus on pollution and worker health and safety. Some critics of the consortium and its funding have noted that the multitude of alliances with Japanese companies makes the organization's mission less focused on building US superiority.
