IRS efforts target offshore bank credit cards

Article Abstract:

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has been allowed by a federal court in Miami, FL, on Oct 30, 2000 to demand from MasterCard and American Express the names of US citizens with cards issued by banks in countries considered as tax havens. However, the IRS effort to indentify tax evaders and recover unreported money stashed offshore has raised concerns among privacy advocates. The type of cards in question are those issued by banks in Antigua and Barbuda, the Caymans and the Bahamas.
