New technology seen cutting nickel mining costs

AME Mineral Economics, an Australian research group, has projected that new nickel mining technology will reduce the industry's production costs by 21% over four years. Three nickel mines will start using the new technology, which uses acid leach and pressure to extricate nickel from laterite ores, in Australia. The three new mines are expected to production costs of less than $1 a pound, compared to the average production cost of about $2.09 a pound in the West. The three nickel mines are also likely to boost the annual nickel production of the world by 63,000 tonnes, or 9%, in 2000.

Potash Corp. expects to escape ravages of global economic turmoil

Saskatoon, Saskatch-based Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan Inc., the biggest manufacturer of fertilizer products worldwide, is optimistic that the global currency crisis will not have an impact on the firm's operations. The company's chief executive, president and chairman, Charles Childers, cited that its fertilizer products will enjoy market demand as a result of the need for boosting agricultural yields as arable-land supply diminishes. Childers also noted that fertilizer demand will be buoyed up by the increasing food demand worldwide.
